Online police verification for tenants: state-wise guide
Tenant police verification is a legal obligation for landlords in most North Indian states — and skipping it can attract penalties if a tenant is later involved in an offence. The good news: most states now accept online submissions.
Why it matters
Verification creates an official record linking the tenant to your property. In Delhi and several states, failure to inform police about tenants can invite action under Section 223 of the BNS (previously IPC 188 framework). Beyond legality, it screens tenants who resist identity checks.
Where to submit, state by state
- Delhi: Delhi Police citizen services portal — tenant registration form with landlord and tenant IDs.
- Uttar Pradesh: UP Police (UPCOP app / citizen portal) tenant verification service.
- Haryana: HarSamay citizen portal tenant registration.
- Rajasthan: Rajasthan Police citizen portal / RajCop services.
- Punjab & Chandigarh: Saanjh portal (Punjab) and Chandigarh Police online services.
Documents you need
- Tenant: Aadhaar or other government photo ID, photo, permanent address, contact.
- Landlord: ID and property address proof.
- Some portals ask for the rental agreement copy.
